I just turned 26, and\nhave been in Ottawa for nearly two years after finishing my Master’s degree\n2009. My background is in health policy and knowledge translation, which is focused\non the best ways to encourage policymakers and decision-makers to consult\nresearch evidence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eSHM: Hm, okay, well this does seems like a bit of a\ndeparture for you, no?\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eJS: Yes and no. The content area would definitely be\nsomething new for me, though I do have a significant interest in exploring how\nhealthcare and health policy interact with the internet and social media.\nHowever, after hearing Liz describe her job (and reading the job description),\nI see a ton of overlap with my current position. Typically, at research\nfoundations, evaluation is a bureaucratic process that receives little to no\ninterest from staff. It’s seen as a burden. Since I started at the Canadian\nHealth Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) in 2010, I’ve helped to completely\noverhaul the system and make it useful and effective. I did this by building\nrelationships with staff, being responsive and fixing issues when they arose,\nand by taking the initiative to listen to their needs and improve our processes\nto be more effective. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eSHM: You sound like a bit of a nerd. Do you have a\ncreative side?\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eJS: Yes! I have pet interest in filmmaking. In 2005, I made\na 50-minute documentary about a volunteer trip I took to Rio de Janeiro. It’s\non YouTube (though, at the time clip length was limited so its in 6 parts!). \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLink: \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MX-_iuXPJpM\"\u003ehttp:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MX-_iuXPJpM\u003c\/a\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI also read many articles about innovation in technology,\ne-commerce, and social media, but love thinking about how these ideas can be\nutilized in academia and the public policy world, two areas that traditionally\nchange at a glacial pace. I’d love to investigate business development\nopportunities for Shopify in those fields.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eSHM: Okay, well that’s a start. What about online\nshopping? Coding? \u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eJS: Hm….well I’ve \u003ci\u003epurchased\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e many things online from Amazon, Etsy and eBay, but set up a store\nthrough Shopify’s free trial just for my application (see \u003ca href=\"\"\u003ehttps:\/\/jonsachsyournewhire.myshopify.com\/\u003c\/a\u003e ) Also, I’ve started a\nproject at work that uses Google Analytics and have just been playing around\nwith the stats, which has been a surprising amount of fun!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eSHM: Wow, sounds pretty good.
